FREEDOM ACROSS AUSTRALA.
Commenced in 1988 as an activity of Ward 43 in the now closed Lidcombe Hospital. It was directed to improving lifestyle for people with spinal injury by conducting excursions and tours. The activity began to provide the opportunity to people both in individual and private care. Tours have been conducted to every state in Australia. One achievement was a forty day tour around Australia in 2005. Fishing became a regular event in 1965 and continues on Lake Macquarie with the occasional venture out to sea when the swell permits.
All management and activity is on a voluntary basis. This involves a degree of understanding of the impact of disability in peoples lives. Volunteers are welcomed to be part of the activity.
Management is by an annually elected committee and as with all activity fund raising is a constant.
Currently there is one modified bus with seating for 12 and three lock downs for wheelchairs and a modified trailer for luggage and transfer equipment.
Over the years support has been through the Lions Movement and currently is based with the Charlton Lions Club in Victoria. This provides valuable assistance in particular overall insurance.
